Second: Courses Description

 

This course aims to provide the student with positive knowledge and skills. The most important of these skills are

  1. Identifying the types of sentences and their functions and conditions
  2. Writing narrative, descriptive, and expository paragraphs in sound English using academic rules of essay writing
  3. Transferring from writing a paragraph into writing a complete opinion essay
  4. Learning a wealth of new English vocabulary to use them in their contexts
  5. Understanding intermediate English texts
  6. Analyzing English texts in a sound linguistic analysis

This course provides the student with the knowledge and positive skills to

  • Understand upper-intermediate and advanced English texts and analyze them with an accurate linguistic analysis that goes beyond superficial comprehension
  • Learn a wealth of the most common vocabulary and specialized terms in order to use them in writing.
  • Write long essays consisting of an introduction, a topic and a conclusion in sound English
  • Write a procedural essay according to academic writing rules.

This course aims to provide the student with a set of knowledge and skills. The most important of these skills are

  1. Understanding advanced English texts from the viewpoint of denotative and connotative meanings.
  2. Analyzing reading texts and criticizing the images used in them to reach the underlying meaning
  3. Acquiring the skills of writing comparison and contrast essays in sound rhetorical English

·Specialized writing (EN-ESS32)

This course aims to train students extensively to write specialized texts in the field of business administration. The course also enables students to analyze the text, determine its objectives, classify its information, and the nature of the receiver. Moreover, the course gives the opportunity to students write specialized texts such as reports, promotional materials, correspondence, and others.

·Rhetoric in Modern Contexts (EN-RHT22)

The course introduces students to the theories and methods of rhetoric developed by Aristotle. It also trains students to employ them in the political fields and other fields in the modern era. At the end of this course, students will be able to analyze rhetorical methods and determine them in their modern contests and its usage.

 

·Linguistics 1 (Grammar) (EN-LNGS11)

This course is an introduction to the study of syntax (the study of how words and morphemes combine to form larger units such as phrases and sentences) and aims to enhance the student's knowledge of basic language structures, grammar, and usage for communication in different situations and contexts.

It also focuses particularly on the systematic study of parts of speech and trains students on editing skills and correct grammar usage.

·Linguistics 2 (Phonetics) (EN-LNGS12)

This course is an introduction to the theories of phonetics (the study of speech sounds) and focuses on the phonemic system and the rules that control the human speech in terms of harmony of sounds, juxtaposition, features, and their effect on understanding speech. This course also deals with speech organs and the general and specific features that distinguish them.

·Linguistics 3 (Morphology & Syntactic Structures) (EN-LNGS21)

This course deals with the structure of the word, the process of word formation, and the methods of word analysis. It also introduces students to morphology (the study of the internal construction of words) and linguistic theories of grammatical structures in the language.

·Linguistics 4 (Semantics and Pragmatics) (EN-LINDS22)

This course aims to provide students with a set of knowledge and skills about the following topics:

  1. Presenting the basics of semantics (the study of meanings) such as meaning, deixis, speech events, and characteristics and relations of meanings
  2. Introducing   students   to   basic   concepts    and    theories    of    pragmatics    (the    study    of how context contributes to meaning) including speech acts theory, politeness, and the cooperative principle.

·Linguistics 5 (Contrastive Linguistics) (EN-LNGS32)

This course draws a contrastive study of the linguistic rules and problems resulting from the discrepancy in text structures of two languages; one of them is Arabic. It also provides a description and analysis of syntax, morphology, semantics, and pragmatics a comparative-contrastive framework.

·Lexical Studies (EN- LEX 31)

This course provides students with an   introduction   to   the   basic   concepts   of   lexicography (the activity or job of writing dictionaries), the various dictionaries, and the rules of research in the field of linguistic dictionaries and the structure of dictionaries and their classifications. This course also enables students to study types of dictionaries such as electronic and encyclopedic dictionaries. In addition, the deals with the basics and applications of specialized terms translation.

·Translation into Arabic 1 (EN-TRIA11)

This course aims to provide students with a set of knowledge and skills about:

  • Fundamentals of translation
  • Methods of translation into Arabic including the pre-translation stage (working tools), the translation stage (analysis, transfer, and restructuring), and the post-translation stage (revising, proofreading and editing the final draft)

 

  • Prerequisite: None

 

·Translation from Arabic 1 (EN-TRFA12)

This course aims to provide students with a set of concepts and basic skills, namely:

  • Basic concepts of translation from Arabic
  • Methods of translation from Arabic including the pre-translation stages (working tools,) and the translation stage (analysis, transfer, and restructuring) and post-translation (revising, proofreading and editing the final draft)
  • Various translation styles, most notably press translation
  • The theory of translation and the various problems facing the translator, especially the beginner. The most important of these problems is the problem of equivalence at the level of words and its related problems in translating into Arabic.

This course aims to provide students with a set of knowledge and skills about the following topics:

  • The basic elements of media and political translation and methods of translating political analytical texts and current events
  • The art of translation, its theories (above-word level and grammatical translation shift), and related problems of translation from Arabic into English

·Translation into Arabic 2 (EN-TRIA22)

This course aims to provide the student with a set of knowledge and skills about the following topics:

  • The basic elements of media and political translation, methods of translating political analytical texts and current events, and the professional application of such knowledge in translating many texts into Arabic
  • Translation Studies and Theories (translation shifts and Vinay & Darbelnet theory), and related problems in translation from English into Arabic)

·Translation from & into Arabic (Business Administration and Economics) (EN-TRFIA31)

This course aims to refine the student’s knowledge and skills about main topics that represent the pillars of translation from and into Arabic, the most prominent of these topics are

  • The basics of various business administration writings
  • Management terms and expressions
  • Problems and difficulties of business translation and the procedures of solving such problems
  • Translating different types of administrative documents from and into Arabic

·Translation from & into Arabic (Legal Translation) (EN-TRFIA32)

This course aims to provide students with a set of knowledge and skills about the following topics:

  • The basics of legal writing, the basic elements of legal translation, the different types of Legal documents in both Arabic and English
  • Methods of translating legal texts into English and introducing legal terms and common linguistic structures and problems of legal translation

·Translation from & into Arabic (Translation of Scientific and Technical texts)) (EN-TRFIA41)

This course sheds light on the importance of the role of translation in scientific and cultural development and cross-cultural communication. It also aims to develop skills of technical translation from and into Arabic through the translation of a number of technical and scientific texts.

·Translation from & into Arabic (Audio-Visual Translation) (EN-TRFIA42)

This course focuses on the various aspects of audio-visual translation, including subtitling, the various types of dubbing, and methods of shortening the text and recognition of related technology. The course also trains students on audio-visual translation from and into Arabic.

·Translation from and to Arabic (Literary Translation) EN-TRFIA42

This course introduces students to literary translation as one of the important tributaries of translation for cross-cultural communication. The course also provides practical training on the standards and basics of literary translation through conducting comparisons between the source texts and their translations in different types of literary works such as poetry, play, and novel. In addition, this course provides an analysis and translation of literary texts of medium size and focuses on analyzing the textual features of each literary genre by adopting the appropriate methods and formulas of the target language.

·Simultaneous Interpreting (EN-INRP41)

This course trains students on translation speed, good speech, and intuition skills and on drawing conclusions. It also aims to improve the student's ability to face stress and pressure during translation and to deal with critical situations.

·Consecutive Translation from & into Arabic (EN-TRFIA43)

This course enables students to provide consecutive translation and understand its techniques (non- interruption of the speaker and great care of numbers, dates, and celebrity names) and the practical and professional context since this type of oral translation is the most common in many professions related to the world of translation. The course also applies simulation in the learning process

·Modern Trends in Language and Translation (EN-TR42)

This course introduces students to modern trends in translation from an applied perspective and helps students to develop their knowledge of translation theories to practice translation in a systematic and professional manner. It also aims to introduce students to systematic methods of comparing the source text and the target text and to ways of solving translation problems.

·Application of Computer in Translation (EN-TR42)

This course introduces students to computer programs and applications that can help in translation, text process, terminology accuracy, and electronic dictionaries.

This course aims to develop and strengthen students' skills through the following:

  • Understanding the main and secondary ideas of the audio material
  • Introducing several exercises to talk about their ideas, daily lives and environment
  • Training to record observations and to differentiate between opinion and fact

This course focuses on the aspect of practical training. Therefore, the course provides an adequate opportunity to improve students' ability and to increase their efficiency in using communication skills, means, and tools to explain their ideas easily. It also increases students’ ability to provide information and to conduct discussions in an understandable and interesting way by holding workshops, presenting presentations and preparing individual and team projects.

·Introduction to Literature (EN-LIT11)

This course provides an overview of English literature from its early beginnings to the present. It also traces the development of different literary genres, the main trends in this field, and literary influences. In addition, it sheds light on the most distinguished writers in the fields of poetry, theater, and novel.

·Literary Texts (Poetry) (EN- LIT 22)

This course introduces the basic features of English poetry as a literary genre, its history, and its most important characteristics through studying the various types of poems in different historical stages, up to the modern form of this literary genre. This course also provides students with the necessary skills to evaluate poetic meanings, to analyze texts through different critical comparisons, and to analyze the extent to which these texts were affected by their artistic, historical, and political contexts. Moreover, the course helps students to understand the language of poetry in selected poems and to realize poetic influences and meanings in various contexts.

·Literary Texts (Classic Drama) (EN-LIT 31)

This course introduces students to the most important theatrical trends in the Elizabethan Era, the era of King James I (Jacobean Era), the era of the restoration of the Stuart monarchy (Restoration Era), and the 18th century era. It also focuses on the most important features of the historical play according to Shakespeare and the methods of critical and literary analysis of texts within the traditional classical framework.

·Literary Texts (Modern Drama) (EN-LIT 32)

This course introduces students to different trends of British and American theater during the period of modernity and post-modernity. It also sheds light on methods of text analysis using literary and critical theories within the framework of modernity and post-modernity.

·Literary texts (story and novel) EN-LIT41

This course is an introduction to the art of fiction in English, being either novel or short story. Therefore, it introduces the history of these two literary genres and the basic characteristics of each one through the study of various texts from different historical stages, up to examples of modern texts. This course also provides students with the basic characteristics and terms of narrative art, the ability to analyze narrative construction through such characteristics and terms, knowledge of how fictional art is affected by its contexts, and the ability to analyze linguistic methods used in both novel and short story.

This course provides a general analytical overview of the political and economic backgrounds that helps in understanding the development of foreign civilization and in addressing the major achievements of this foreign civilization in thinking, art, and science.

This course introduces students to the basic structures of the Arabic language and focuses on the following:

  • Using basic Arabic grammar correctly
  • Understanding all tense formulas

 

  • Understanding Arabic verb forms to distinguish and use them correctly in various Arabic language skills.

This course completes the process of developing students’ skills and ability to write correct sentences grammatically. The course also aims to enrich students’ verbal and expressive outcome through reading a set of selected texts and analyzing it.

This course introduces students to Modern Standard Arabic and supports the students’ four language skills according to the advanced level

This course aims to make students aware of the importance of writing and its forms (creative writing and functional writing). It also trains students to write different types of paragraphs, essays, summaries, and reports in Arabic, to read and analyze different texts, and to edit various texts.

·Second Foreign Language 1 (Chinese or Spanish) (EN-SFLN11)

This course is designed for students who do not have any prior knowledge of the language. It helps students to acquire the language and to know the culture of the society that uses it through studying different dialogues of everyday life situations. The course also allows students to employ such situations to acquire the basics of the language: vocabulary, grammatical rules, and communication skills.
